Panic begins in Greece: tourist resorts turn into ghost towns

“There is an apocalypse in Europe, we are living in a nightmare!” – such statements about the infernal heat were made by the local authorities and are popular with tourists in Greece. Cities and resort areas of the country are empty, tourists are running away from the incredible heat and accompanying forest fires. At the same time, the weather does not promise any relaxation.

According to Sky News, more than 7,000 acres of land have already turned to ashes in Greece — and these are often resort areas. In the suburb of Mandra, near Athens, 250 firefighters supported by 75 fire trucks, 11 planes, and nine helicopters are fighting the fire. The city itself is being evacuated. In the area of Corinth, known on the tourist map, west of Athens, at least 30 houses were seriously damaged by fire in the city of Loutraki yesterday alone.

A similar “apocalypse” can unfold at any moment in neighboring countries. On Wednesday, Sardinia recorded a temperature of +46 degrees and experts fear that other natural disasters are only a matter of time. In Turkey, the popular Datcha resort was cut off, mostly by locals, the alleged cause of the disaster is the heat. In general, let’s recall, experts fear that the “thermal explosion” recorded in the Sahara will lead to the fact that tourism in Southern Europe will “be covered with a copper basin”. So, by the middle of this week, records of +50 degrees Celsius are expected on the Italian islands that are extremely popular with tourists — Sicily and Sardinia (read here). At the same time, the “heat wave” stretches to China, and is also raging in the other hemisphere – and no relaxations are promised yet.

And the risks are similar to the truth — tourists run away from the most popular resorts in panic. “Our hotel has turned into an oven,” said tourists from Great Britain who came to rest on the popular Greek island of Rhodes in July this year and found themselves in hellish heat – the thermometer consistently showed +40 °C.

“Toasted” vacationers regularly felt a sense of excessive weakness, malaise, and dizziness. They were forced to decide to cut short their vacation and return to their homeland three days earlier. Read details at this link.
