UN grateful to Turkey for peace efforts in Ukraine

The UN expressed gratitude to Turkey for its efforts in the framework of the Istanbul talks to establish peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“We are very grateful to Turkey for these efforts. We hope that the statements and promises that we have heard will turn into concrete actions on the ground, which means a ceasefire,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary General, said at a daily briefing.

According to him, the UN will continue to help ensure that the negotiations in Istanbul bring successful results.

A meeting of the delegations of Russia and Ukraine was held at the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul on Tuesday.

An agreement to hold it was reached during a telephone conversation between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This was the first face-to-face meeting of the parties since March 7, when negotiations were held in the Brest region of Belarus. After that, the delegations constantly communicated via video link.
