Bali to introduce a quota system for tourists

According to the news agency Detik, the governor of the Indonesian island of Bali, Wayan Koster, said that the authorities are ready to introduce a quota system for foreign tourists.

“We will no longer welcome mass tourism. We will limit [the number of tourists] by implementing a quota system,” the governor said. He explained that one of the quota systems under consideration requires foreigners to register a year before a scheduled visit to Bali and wait their turn to enter.

“The quota system for the next 100 years. If we let it continue as it is, these cheap tourists will come. Most of them eat packaged rice, ride bicycles, motorcycles, break the law <…> If quotas start working, those who are going to come next year will fight for inclusion in the lists already now,” Koster said.
