A new tourist tax has been introduced in Bali. But not everyone can contribute to it

Bali authorities have introduced a new tourist tax for foreigners coming on holiday. The innovations are reported on the website of the government project Love Bali, which is designed to preserve the unique nature of the island.

Who must pay the fee?

According to the report, all travelers visiting Bali will now be required to pay a fee of 150 thousand Indonesian rupiah (about $10) per person. This condition applies to all age categories – including children. In addition, the requirement affects those travelers arriving in Bali by domestic flights or ferries from other parts of Indonesia.

How to pay the fee

You can deposit money either upon arrival or in advance using the official Love Bali website. At the same time, the authorities themselves strongly recommend transferring funds before visiting the island. However, it is worth considering that for this you will need a MasterCard, Visa American Express, and JCB bank card. Travelers who pay the fee this way will receive a special QR code that must be saved throughout the trip.

Who is exempt from the fee?

It is noted that payment of the fee is a mandatory requirement for all foreigners, except those who have a “golden”, diplomatic or student visa, as well as representatives of official delegations. In addition, citizens of Indonesia and countries that are part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as people arriving under a family reunification program, are exempt from the tax. To receive the tax exemption, they will have to apply online in advance.

It is noted that the funds received from the payment of the fee will be used to implement initiatives to preserve the culture and nature of Bali. Such programs include projects to restore mangrove forests and coral reefs.

The requirement to pay the tax came into force on February 14.

Bali today remains one of the most popular destinations for tourists from all over the world. According to data provided by the Indonesian government, about 11 million foreign travelers visited the island in 2023 alone. In 2024, the tourist flow may continue to grow and reach 14 million people. It is expected that in total the authorities will be able to receive about 180 thousand dollars in profit annually from the new collection.
