8 laws you should know about if you go to Goa

For most people, a trip here, of course, is associated with fond memories. But in fact, it is very easy to ruin your vacation in these parts, for example, due to ignorance of some specific laws. “DIP” will tell about them today.

Photography lovers will surely want to capture the stunning sunsets, beaches, and monuments they see here. But don’t film people you don’t know without their permission. This is considered offensive and illegal.

Public displays of affection are prohibited in this country. It is a crime under Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code to attract the attention of members of the public through “lewd acts”. A person can be imprisoned for up to three months or fined. However, the law does not specify what falls under the concept of “indecent acts”. But often it is used by the police to harass couples.

Launching balloons, kites, and even more sky lanterns are prohibited in India if you have not received special permission to do so. This law has existed in the country since 1934.

A marvelous find worth more than 10 rupees can turn into a subpoena if you do not report the item to the authorities.

Goa is full of wonderful beaches, so obviously there will be people walking around in swimsuits and swimming trunks. However, this does not give anyone the right to stare at them. Representatives of the authorities can remark an impudent observer.

At the same time, you should not appear topless on the beach. Nudist beaches can be found in any other country, but here they are generally prohibited. And although Goa is considered the party capital of India, even in this state there are quite strict rules regarding behavior in public and appearance.

According to the Aliens Registration Act (1939), every foreigner staying in India for more than 180 days must report his entry and movements from one locality to another to higher officials. The law also applies to landlords and managers of boarding houses and hotels, ships, or aircraft. It was introduced by the British to control the entry and movement of foreigners into India. But now this law has turned into a tool to persecute people and hamper India’s efforts to develop tourism.

Another important law is about the use of alcohol. In each state, the age limit is different, and in some, it reaches 25 years. Of course, it is strange that a citizen has the right to vote in elections from the age of 18, but is not considered mature enough to decide whether he can drink alcohol or not. Also in October 2022, the Goa Department of Tourism officially banned the preparation and consumption of alcoholic beverages on the state’s popular beaches. Those convicted of violating the order will be fined 5,000 to 50,000 rupees.
