Facebook removed fake profiles and groups associated with the Belarusian KGB

These actors are spreading false information about the war in Ukraine and the crisis on the border with Belarus.

The Meta has released its latest quarterly Internet Threat Report. In it, the company reports that it discovered the activities of structures associated with the governments of Russia and Belarus, which were engaged in cyber espionage. According to the report, the activity of these fake profiles intensified shortly before the Russian attack on Ukraine.

disinformation action

Facebook discovered, among other things, a coordinated disinformation campaign in Polish and English that took place on the day the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. The false profiles then spread false information that Ukrainian troops had surrendered without a fight and Ukrainian leaders had fled the country.

Previously, the same profiles carried out a disinformation campaign against Poland. They accused our country of mistreating migrants from the Middle East who tried to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. In mid-March, one of the fake accounts associated with the Belarusian special services called for organizing a protest against the Polish government in Warsaw. According to Facebook, the account and related posts were deleted on the same day.

Recently, the Meta concern has also noted an increase in the number of cyber attacks on the accounts of Ukrainian military leaders. Hackers hack into their accounts and post videos calling on Ukrainian soldiers to surrender.
