Lost in translation: Thailand tourist sets fire after hotel conflict

A tourist from the UK is suspected of setting fire to a hotel room after a quarrel with an administrator – Thai police are looking for a man who fled the scene after the incident.

According to Metro, the guest was dissatisfied with the service provided and made a scandal.

Sahatsawat, 23, a hotel manager in the Thai city of Chiang Mai, told police that before the fire he had a falling out with a hotel client. Details of the incident.

“The tourist was angry with something and yelled at me. I don’t know why, because I couldn’t understand everything he said,” the administrator said.

The hotel employee admitted that he feared for his health and “hid in a nearby pantry.” Later, the man saw the guest pack his bags and quickly left the hotel.

“His relief turned to horror: immediately after the angry client left in a hurry, the worker noticed smoke rising from the room where the Briton was staying,” the source adds. Almost immediately, the flames engulfed all four floors of the hotel.

Six guests who were trapped in the fire went out to the balconies of their rooms so as not to suffocate from the thick black smoke.

The fire service that arrived at the scene fought the fire until early morning, there were no casualties.

The police around the perimeter cordoned off the tourist area of the city where the hotel is located, and the Briton was put on the wanted list.

“This is a serious incident. Officers are urgently looking for a Briton as he is suspected of arson. The fire endangered the lives of many people. We urgently need to find a suspect to obtain evidence,” Maj. Tawatchchai Pongwiwatchchai told reporters at the scene.
