US tourist smashes statues at the Vatican after denial of Pope’s audience

According to the newspaper Il Messaggero, a US tourist has been arrested in the Vatican after he hit two ancient statues in the Chiaramonti Museum after his request for an audience with the Pope was refused.

The dissatisfied tourist angrily threw an ancient bust off the pedestal and hurried to leave the museum, damaging another sculpture along the way. The figures are 2,000 years old.

The man was arrested, and the police believe he has mental problems.

Museum staff evaluate the damage and begin immediate restoration of valuable exhibits: one of the figures has lost its nose.
