The German city of Lübeck has announced that it will turn off the exterior lighting of public buildings from Monday due to rising electricity prices and warnings of energy shortages in the winter, DPA reports.
City officials said today that key landmarks, including two medieval gates, as well as churches in the Old Town, will be affected, the BTA added.
“The time is such that we need to do everything possible, including as a municipality, to save energy,” said Mayor Jan Lindenau.
Until now, municipal buildings were illuminated until 1 o’clock after midnight.
The war in Ukraine and a significant reduction in gas supplies from Russia led to an increase in energy prices not only in Germany but also throughout Europe.
