Hospitals in Munich are overcrowded due to a surge in COVID cases after Oktoberfest

The number of patients with coronavirus in Munich hospitals is increasing after the end of Oktoberfest, DPA reports concerning BTA.

Experts warned ahead of the holiday that the number of new cases would rise sharply because the event, which boosted the usual tourist flow to the city by millions, was carried out with little to no precautions.

To date, a total of 478 patients with coronavirus infection have been registered in the city, and hospitalized in all departments of the hospital, including the intensive care unit.

This is 61 percent more than last Tuesday. Compared to the last day before Oktoberfest, the increase was 137 percent.

While the number of people admitted to regular hospital wards has continued to rise in recent weeks, the trend has now also affected intensive care units, which saw 39 admissions compared to 24 a week ago.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said he expected the rise in cases to continue and be accompanied by “more severe cases and then a strain on intensive care units”.

“It’s a shame it has come to this,” he said in an interview broadcast by both Er Te El and En Te Fau TV channels.
