“Cold shower for the political elite”: Former ambassador on the consequences of the West’s dependence on Russia

– I think that the consequences of our dependence and financing of gang politics will become such a cold shower for the political elite of the Western world and make people realize that Lenin’s teachings should not be implemented, which we are doing, said the former Polish ambassador to Latvia and Armenia, Jerzy Marek Novakovsky.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has paid Russia 35 billion euros for importing energy resources, said EU diplomat Josep Borrell. At the same time, Ukraine received only one billion euros from the Community for its defense needs. “Let’s not have any illusions, this disproportion will definitely remain for some time,” Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, former Polish ambassador to Latvia and Armenia, commented to Polish Radio 24. As he explained, this is due to the “huge dependence on Russia”, which “Europe supported of its own free will.”

– We pay Moscow a lot of money for huge amounts of energy resources. In turn, in the case of Ukraine, for the time being – and perhaps for some time – we will offer economic or military assistance. So these are two completely different categories of money, he said.

According to him, “our task – as EU societies and people who are experts and politicians – is to strive to reduce this dependence on the Kremlin.” “I think that an important consequence of the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine is that societies are becoming more aware that this addiction is terribly harmful and that it needs to be stopped,” he stressed. The guest of the program also added that “citizens will want a minimum of freedom.”

Jerzy Marek Nowakowski also noted that there are countries that cannot receive energy resources that do not come from Russia. – Therefore, the exit from Russian hydrocarbon supplies should be slow. Otherwise, the economies will stop because they will not have a source of energy, he stressed.

However, as he pointed out, “the more cruel and rude Russian policy is, the faster we will get away from addictions, because this is a paralyzing factor.” – Of course, it’s bad that we – the Western world – do not do it overnight, like the Americans. But Americans can afford such a luxury, he stressed.

– I think that this lesson and the consequences of our dependence and financing of gang politics – otherwise we cannot talk about it – will become such a cold shower for the political elite of the Western world and make people realize that Lenin’s teachings should not be implemented, that we are now and do,” he said.
