The United States will accept refugees from Ukraine, but not through Mexico

The government of US President Joe Biden will make it easier for people fleeing the war in Ukraine to travel from Europe to the United States, but will also try to close the unofficial route through northern Mexico that has emerged in recent weeks, according to the Associated Press. reported.

The program announced today will simplify the submission of asylum applications to Ukrainians and other people fleeing hostilities. Those who appear on the border with Mexico with asylum will no longer be allowed into the country. Thousands have already done so since the invasion of Ukraine by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The United States says it expects to accept up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine. About 15,000 people have arrived since the conflict began on February 24, mostly through Mexico. However, from Monday, this route will no longer be possible, except in exceptional circumstances, say US officials.

This is an attempt by the United States to fulfill its promise to help Eastern European countries cope with 5 million refugees from Ukraine and at the same time reduce the number of migrants trying to cross the border with Mexico, which has become a political problem for Biden and his government.
