Forty years after the wedding of the British heir to the throne, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, a piece of their wedding cake was sold at auction for 2220 pounds (2620 euros), according to AFP.
Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, who became Princess of Wales after the wedding, were married on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The couple divorced 11 years later, in 1992. Lady Dee died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.
A piece of marzipan cake sold at auction is decorated with the royal coat of arms in red, blue and gold. Immediately after the ceremony, it was presented to Moira Smith, who at the time was serving as Queen Mother at Clarence House.
A piece of cake measuring 20 by 18 centimeters and weighing 794 grams was stored in stretch film in the old form for baking for 40 years. The Smith family kept it until 2008, when it was purchased by a collector who offered it at Dominic Winter’s auction in Cyrenchester, Gloucestershire.
23 formal cakes were prepared for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, including the main multi-tiered fruit cake 1.5 meters high and weighing 102 kilograms.
The piece, donated by Moira Smith, is a cake served to members of the Clarence House family in gratitude for their service.
The organizers of the auction expected that a piece of wedding cake, which was called a “unique royal souvenir”, would be sold for 300-500 pounds.
