The United States will ask the UN General Assembly to expel Russia from the Human Rights Council (HRC), according to Reuters.
On Monday, Washington’s permanent representative to the World Organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, explained that this was due to accusations by Ukraine that Russian troops had killed hundreds of defenseless civilians in the suburbs of Kiev in Bucha.
Russia has been a member of the Geneva-based Council for the second year of its three-year term.
A country may be excluded from the HRC if a qualified two-thirds majority votes in favor. This may be due to persistent gross and systematic human rights violations during the country’s membership.
