Named the cheapest EU country for tourists

Among the European destinations that European tourists preferred to visit before the pandemic were Paris, Rome, London, and Madrid. However, in 2022, Hungary was recognized as one of the cheapest EU countries for recreation.

In the conditions of global inflation and the lack of direct flights to many destinations, tourists began to look for cheaper places to rest, the agency Post Office UK reported. Of course, the Hungarian capital Budapest also has a lot to offer, but don’t forget about other great cities such as Gyor, Szeged and Tihany. Hungary will definitely leave tourists with very pleasant memories, as any traveler can enjoy the local cuisine, be amazed by the architecture and charming countryside, and also be able to bathe in one of the thermal baths.

The climate of Hungary is typically continental European with hot and dry summers and very cold winters. It is believed that the best time to visit Hungary is from March to May, although September to November is also a good time to travel to the European country. The agency compared 36 different destinations according to several criteria and compiled a list of countries where you can find the best value for money for vacations.

Let’s list the determining factors:

  • can of cola
  • a glass of wine
  • bottle of water
  • a bottle of beer
  • three-course meal for two
  • sunscreen
  • insect repellent
  • cup of coffee

Hungary managed to take 15th place in the world ranking. However, according to the EU ranking, Hungary is in the top ten, occupying 9th place. For the mentioned services and products, travelers have to pay 2,400 hryvnias or 33,000 forints, while the most expensive of them is a three-course lunch, which costs 1,750 rubles or 24,000 forints.

Other cheap holiday destinations

Turkey and Bulgaria are also among the cheapest holiday destinations, according to a Post Office UK report published in April. In addition, out of 36 destinations, the southern Portuguese resort of Algarve (resorts of Albufeira, Alvor, Vilamoura, Lagos) ranks third and cheapest in the Eurozone.

Previously, DIP wrote that “Turkey has ceased to be the leader of the Mediterranean in tourism“.
