In Turkey, tourists were warned of a new danger in the Mediterranean

The unpleasant but theoretically innocent “sea snot” that has recently attacked Turkey’s beaches could be replaced by much more unpleasant “invasive species”. This warning was published in the local media by Turkish biologists, who recorded a sharp increase in the number of jellyfish on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Unpleasant guests were most likely brought by strong winds and currents, and due to the recent expansion of the Suez Canal. And they were seen both in the depths – many were caught by local fishermen – and on the beaches. As a result, scientists were forced to provide explanations to local residents.

“Iskenderun Technical University has initiated an investigation into the detection of jellyfish earlier in the season. Jellyfish spotted at a depth of 35 fathoms on the coast of Iskenderun Bay are invasive species, “said Tahir Ozcan, a marine biologist.

Probably, unwanted guests on the beach of Turkey arrived after the expansion of the Suez Canal in 2016 – and got used to the local waters.

The problem is that the peaceful coexistence of jellyfish with tourists is unlikely. At least because this “soup” is not only unattractive but also dangerous. “We would like to warn our citizens and tourists in advance – if jellyfish are brought by the current to your shore. Do not touch them, because they are poisonous. We ask tourists and locals to report to our university if you notice such clusters, “Ozcan said.

Recall that the threat is real: only in late October, on the shores of the popular resort of Kash, in the province of Antalya, was found an invasion of jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda, poisonous to the touch. Including injured tourists. Read the details at the link.
