German airports report rising passenger numbers but falling freight traffic

Air traffic in Germany has recovered in the current summer season from the lowest level reached the height of the coronavirus pandemic. However, according to the Federal Statistical Service “Destatis”, it remains below the pre-pandemic level.

Around 64.4 million passengers used Germany’s main airports between January and June – four times more than during the same period in 2021. However, the results were a third lower than in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

In June alone, 16.3 million passengers passed through the country’s 23 largest airports, which is 215.1 percent more than in June last year, but below the results for the same month of 2019.

Problems with air transportation remained mainly due to airspace restrictions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the quarantine imposed by China. Thanks to them, air transportation of goods from Germany in the first half of the year decreased by 3.4 percent to 2.5 million tons compared to the same period in 2021. However, this is a 7.6 percent increase over 2019 levels.

We will remind you, that DIP previously reported that tourists in Germany were advised to abandon black suitcases: they were found guilty of the air crisis, details here.
