Gender equality at resort: A popular Spanish resort now only allowed to wear swimming trunks

“Take note of the cultural change,” notes the Daily Star, reviewing the Spanish resorts’ new approach to a rather personal matter. Now, on the Costa Brava, there are no differences between women and men: in the name of equality, everyone can appear in public places only in swimming trunks.

“Topless sunbathing on the beach is common in continental Europe, but rarely do we see women swimming in the pool and walking in the beach bar without a swimsuit top. However, changes in the field of equality in Spain mean that now women are not required to wear anything but swimming trunks,” the publication says.

The source also says: “Thanks to the efforts of feminist activists, a victory has been achieved: topless sunbathing and showing breasts in the pool is now a legal right in Catalonia, Spain.” This applies to both the capital of Barcelona and most of the Costa Brava.

“This year, some pools have decided to ban women topless sunbathing due to the high number of complaints. However, they were told that such a ban is against the law and that everyone should accept it if they see women topless sunbathing in the pool. Everyone would risk discrimination on any motives, including gender, religious beliefs or clothing,” the publication adds.
