Tourism in Egypt is not lucky: after a series of incidents that excited tourists, a new blow occurred. This time, the roads of Egypt were hit by floods and torrential mudslides, which destroyed the roads through which popular tourist routes pass.
Excursions from the popular resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada to places of cultural and historical importance were canceled after a sudden surge of floods and mudslides destroyed major roads, local newspaper Awan Masr reported. The previous evening, the Sharm el-Sheikh – Dahab road, which leads tourists to the monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai, became inaccessible: a section of the road from 16 to 35 km from Dahab was closed for vacationers of the resort on the Sinai Peninsula. The route from Hurghada to Luxor is blocked on the section from 40 to 85 km due to washed-out sections on the Safaga-Kena road.
What happened?
Egypt’s General Directorate of Highways and Bridges has warned tour companies and guides that floods and mudslides have severely damaged major transport arteries. These unforeseen natural disasters destroyed part of the road infrastructure, which threatens the safety of travelers. In response, the agency decided to temporarily close sections of the road to prevent possible incidents.
Excursion companies and travel agencies, faced with these troubles, were forced to cancel their planned routes, causing inconvenience to thousands of tourists who wanted to enjoy the riches of Egypt’s history and culture. Specialists have already started work on the restoration of roads, but the exact dates of restoration are still unknown.
Tourists stranded in these resort towns are worried and hope that the repair work will be completed as soon as possible. They also hoped that travel agencies would provide alternative leisure options to make their stay at the resort more enjoyable.
