On the 39th day of the war, Ukraine regained control of the Kiev region. The withdrawal of the Russian military is costly. The streets of the city of Bucha near Kiev, until recently the center of fierce fighting, are now littered with abandoned tanks, destruction and the bodies of people in civilian clothes. According to the mayor, about 300 people are buried in the mass cemeteries.
A number of cities in the Chernihiv region are again under the control of Ukraine.
President Zelensky said cities in the south and east are Russia’s new targets.
“What is the goal of the Russian military? They want to take the Donbass in the east and south of Ukraine. What is our goal? To defend ourselves,” he stressed.
Attacks on Odessa became more frequent. The situation in Mariupol remains difficult, and attempts to evacuate the Red Cross have not been successful.
