The United States will work with its allies to supply Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine to strengthen its defenses in the Donbas, according to the New York Times.
According to a source, who wished to remain anonymous, Washington’s decision to act as an intermediary in the transfer of tanks was made in response to a request from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. This is the first case since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, when the United States helped provide tanks, the American publication notes.
The transfer of tanks that the Ukrainian military knows how to handle will begin soon, the official said. However, he declined to say how many tanks will be sent or from which countries they will arrive, the newspaper said.
According to him, the tanks will allow Ukraine to launch long-range artillery strikes on Russian facilities in the Donbass, according to the New York Times.
