About 300 people are buried in mass graves in Bucha, a city northwest of Kyiv’s capital, where fierce fighting took place and was recaptured by Ukrainian troops, Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk told AFP.
“In Bucha, we have already buried 280 people in mass graves.” It was impossible to do this in the three cemetery parks of the municipality, which are within shooting distance of the Russian military, “Fedoruk said by phone.
In recent days, Russian troops have retreated from several settlements near the Ukrainian capital after their attempt to encircle Kyiv failed.
Ukraine said Bucha was “liberated”, but the city was destroyed by fighting. AFP reporters were able to see many gaping holes from shells that hit homes and the remains of cars that were there.
The bodies of at least 20 plainclothes men were lying today on Bucha Street, a city northwest of Kyiv that was repulsed by Russian troops from Russian troops, an AFP journalist noted on the spot.
