On Thursday, Poland will officially submit a proposal to send a NATO peacekeeping mission to Ukraine. The leaders of the Alliance member countries are gathering in Brussels for an extraordinary summit in connection with the month-long war in Ukraine. Poland will be represented at the meeting by President Andrzej Duda.
At the NATO summit, the Polish president should both speak about Poland’s security situation and formally present a proposal for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. The head of NATO said a few days ago that sending such a mission is not possible, as it risks large-scale conflict.
Minister-President Jakub Kumoch emphasizes that all the ideas that are currently being discussed in NATO are primarily aimed at helping Ukraine in the fight against Russia.
– This postulate has been introduced and is being analyzed by the allies. Some have already mentioned it, some have not. We are primarily focused on how to effectively help Ukraine, how to increase its defense potential, while using deterrence against Russia,” adds Yakub Kumoch.
Strengthening the security of Poland
During the summit, Poland will also seek to further strengthen the country’s security with the help of NATO. The head of the Alliance said that such decisions would be made at the meeting, although he did not give details yet. It is known that, in addition, NATO will send troops to four Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.
President Andrzej Duda recently visited Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Turkey. Polish diplomats emphasize that the president communicated with the authorities of these countries in order to be able to present the position of the countries of the region, both at the summit and at a later meeting with the US president. Joe Biden is due to fly to Poland tomorrow.
