“We must prepare for a long war in Ukraine,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said ahead of a meeting of Allied foreign ministers in Brussels. He reiterated that Russia was withdrawing its troops from the north to regroup, rearm and resupply, and then attack and capture the entire Donbas. “We are entering a critical phase of the war,” Stoltenberg added. He stressed that, in response to Russian aggression, Allies must strengthen sanctions and NATO’s deterrence and defense policy.
New strategic concept
Jens Stoltenberg also stressed that the Allies will continue to rearm Ukraine. “Our support is already playing a significant role,” he added. As he stressed, for many years the member states of the Alliance have supported Ukraine, tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have been trained, who are now fighting the invaders. The Secretary General said that during the two-day meeting of foreign ministers a new NATO strategic concept would also be discussed. – This is a roadmap for the Alliance to adapt to a more dangerous world. The new concept will have to take into account the consequences of Russian aggression, as well as the growing role of China, which is pursuing an increasingly expansionist policy in East Asia, the Secretary General of the Alliance stressed.
As part of the discussion of the new strategic concept, Poland is looking for permanent NATO bases at home. Decisions on the new concept should be made at the June summit in Madrid.
Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers
At 18:00, a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers will begin, dedicated to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Allies should talk about further financial and military support for Ukraine. We are talking about advanced weapons, anti-tank weapons and air defense systems. Allies are also expected to help Ukraine defend itself against cyber or chemical or biological attacks.
