Danish Defense Minister Morten Bodskov said that the government is ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission. According to the euroactiv portal, this is a response to Poland’s proposal on the need for such a mission in Ukraine.
“The Danish government is ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission if it can help end this bloody war,” Bodskov said ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers on Wednesday in Brussels.
– We have many years of experience in this work, and I definitely believe that Denmark can take part in it and make a difference, – he added.
Willingness to strengthen the contingent in the Baltics
The Minister of Defense also announced his readiness to strengthen the contingent in the Baltics, where Danish soldiers and aircraft are already present. He also recalled that after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned that Russia could use biological or chemical weapons in Ukraine, Denmark sent equipment that would help detect “such atrocities.”
Since Denmark is a member of NATO, its soldiers cannot currently take part in the conflict taking place in Ukraine, writes euroactiv. But she adds that Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said last week that “there are no legal barriers to travel to Ukraine” for Danish volunteers who would like to fight for the Ukrainian army.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczynski said in Kyiv on Tuesday that Ukraine needs “a NATO peacekeeping mission or perhaps some kind of broader international treaty.”
