An extraordinary NATO summit began in Brussels in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine that began on February 24. Immediately after the invasion, the leaders of the North Atlantic Alliance held a video conference call. Today they will sit down together at the negotiating table, which will also be attended by US President Joe Biden.
The head of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said that this meeting was supposed to be a demonstration of transatlantic unity. “We are the strongest union in the world and, standing shoulder to shoulder, we are safe,” he stressed.
In turn, President Andrzej Duda said that “it is extremely important to stop the war in Ukraine.” – This must be done by the most peaceful means, but very effectively and decisively. The Alliance must show unity and absolute determination. This is what I expect,” the President of Poland said.
NATO decisions
At the summit, a decision must be made on the rearmament of Ukraine so that it can also defend itself against chemical and nuclear threats. If so, NATO will send anti-WMD equipment to Ukraine for the first time, despite growing fears that Russia might use it.
Yesterday, the Alliance Secretary General warned Moscow that it would never win a nuclear war. In addition, the summit should decide to send four battle groups to Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Hungary. There will also be discussions on a further increase in the number of Alliance troops in Poland and the long-term presence of NATO forces.
Also at the summit, a decision should be made to extend the term of office of Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg until next autumn. He was supposed to leave on October 1 to take over as head of Norway’s central bank, but with Russia’s attack on Ukraine, allies began to say that the term of office should be extended to maintain continuity. It is believed that now is not the time to recall the highest political position in NATO.
