Toothpaste is dangerous to health, said an international team of researchers led by scientists from the University of North Carolina. The main threat is the antibacterial substance triclosan, which is found in toothpaste and other products, as it can cause inflammation of the intestines. The relevant scientific article was published in the journal Nature Communications.
Once in the digestive tract, triclosan affects the intestinal microflora, so some microbes are harmful and contribute to inflammatory processes. This is directly due to the fact that bacteria secrete enzymes such as beta-glucuronidase – when interacting with triclosan, they become pathogenic for the intestine. However, researchers have been able to develop a compound that blocks the metabolic process involving triclosan.
