The EU is introducing new general rules for short-term housing rentals

Today, the European Commission presented a proposal to introduce new general rules for the short-term rental of residential real estate. The proposal is expected to enter into force two years after its adoption, BTA reports.

According to the commission, owners of such objects need to register online and receive a unique number, providing monthly data about the object and tenants. It is expected that the data will help the authorities in the EU countries to develop detailed rules for this activity and penalties for violations.

It is reported that short-term rentals account for a quarter of the total number of overnight stays by tourists in the EU. This share is steadily growing: this year it increased by 138% compared to last year. According to the EC, almost all (89%) short-term tenants recommended this approach.
