U.S. troops fired into the air at Kabul airport on Monday as thousands of Afghans took to the runway, despairing of leaving the country the day after the Taliban took over.
“The crowd is out of control. The shooting was carried out only to defuse the chaos, “a US official told Reuters by telephone.
The airport is commanded by US forces, which are helping to evacuate embassy staff and other civilians. “I am very scared here. They shoot a lot in the air, “an eyewitness told AFP.
