In Germany, discussions continue around the introduction of a ban on the issuance of tourist visas to citizens of the Russian Federation against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he did not support the proposal to ban the issuance of Schengen visas to all Russians.
Meanwhile, the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU / CSU) came out for stopping the issuance of visas to Russians to the EU countries. “It’s unbearable that Russians go on vacation to Europe and spend their money as if nothing happened,” CDU/CSU MEP Dennis Radtke told the German newspaper Bild.
CSU Bundestag deputy Andrea Lindholz urged the federal government not to oppose European partners in the “visa issue”.
“The issuance of tourist visas for residents of Russia should be stopped. It is about sending clear signals to the Russian population. The place of rest in Putin’s Russia should not be Paris and Porto, but Pyongyang and Beijing,” she said.
Another parliamentarian from the CDU / CSU faction, Jürgen Hardt, in turn, proposed restricting entry to the EU countries for those who personally benefit from the Russian authorities, instead of punishing all Russian citizens not guilty of the conflict in Ukraine.
