Britain’s oldest pub closed due to pandemic after 1,229 years of operation

The oldest pub in the UK, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, has closed after 1,229 years of operation, according to LADBible. The institution could not survive the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-coronavirus restrictions.

The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub was founded in St Albans near London before the Norman Conquest in 793.

The current owner of the establishment, Christo Tofalli, said he tried to do everything possible to keep the pub open, but “the last two years have been unprecedented for the hospitality industry.” According to Tofalli, he is heartbroken, because the pub was not just a business: the staff of the establishment became a real family for him, and he is very sorry that they have to be fired.
