The UNWTO, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, has said it joins the World Health Organization (WHO) in calling for restrictions on travel. Lockdowns have shown their ineffectiveness in preventing the spread of coronavirus, the association said. It is a warning to the UNWTO against the use of general travel restrictions – such measures could cause economic and social damage – said in the association, supporting the decision of the WHO that “barrier” measures should be relaxed.
“The travel restrictions imposed did not affect the spread of the Omicron option,” the organization said. Measures such as testing, isolation, quarantine and vaccination imposed on travelers should be based on risk assessment, experts add.
“When it comes to stopping the spread of new variants of the virus, general travel restrictions are simply counterproductive. In fact, by restricting tourism, these restrictions do more harm than good, especially in places where international tourists depend on jobs, economic prosperity and sustainable change, ”said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.
According to him, it is now critical to restore tourism and work on restoring the sector.
Earlier, the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr. Hans-Henry P. Kluge, expressed hope that the pandemic was coming to an end: the omicron was displacing the Delta at an unprecedented rate and it was clear that it was a less dangerous option.
It will be recalled that many experts predict the return of tourism to normal life in the summer season of 2022. Including the discovery of Europe for our tourists. Read the details at the link.
