You can inhale feces: the flight attendant told how to visit the toilet on the plane

The toilet is recognized as the dirtiest place on the plane. The air there is so terrible that with careless behavior you can accidentally inhale feces and arrive “brown”. Speaking to washroom specialists at Sanctuary Bathrooms, a former flight attendant revealed the dos and don’ts when it comes to using an airplane bathroom.

Seat belts, seat pockets, trays, and carpets on an airplane may be full of germs, but according to a flight attendant, there is a place where there is “no clean air at all” and the water in an airplane toilet often turns “brown.” Therefore, it is important to use a protective mask when visiting an airplane lavatory.

“There is no window, poor air ventilation. This means that every time you go to the bathroom, you are breathing in the air of many others who have “done their thing” before you, especially if it is a long-haul flight. You can inhale potential particles of feces because air circulates after flushing the toilet,” the expert warned.

For this reason, she did not recommend that travelers brush their teeth in the airplane toilet: “Don’t brush your teeth in the airplane toilet. All water on the plane comes from a single water tank and is not filtered. Use bottled water if you have to, but my top tip is don’t bring a toothbrush or dishwashing bag next to the toilet on the plane.”

The crew member also urged passengers to never touch any surfaces, including toilet seats: “This sounds dramatic, but I strongly recommend that you avoid direct contact with as many surfaces as possible in an airplane toilet.”

When opening the door, she advised you to touch the handle with your foot, for example, your knee, or with your hands if you are wearing disposable gloves. “Most airplane toilets have wipes next to the sink that you can use to wipe every surface before you touch it. If this is not possible, take a few sheets of toilet roll and use them to avoid touching anything with your fingertips. At worst, use your knuckles instead of your fingers and wipe your hands immediately afterward. Finally, try your best to levitate over the toilet seat, don’t sit on it or touch it. If you have trouble balancing, there are usually handles you can hold on to, but again, wipe them down or cover them with paper first. The same goes for pressing the flush button,” she added, talking about ways to maximize germ protection.

However, tourists who care about their health will also have to carry out hygienic procedures after the flight. After landing the plane, especially after visiting it, you should take a shower. “Due to the poor air circulation on the plane (especially in the lavatories) and the many surfaces that can harbor a lot of germs, you can leave your flight with dirty hands, hair and clothes. As soon as you arrive at your destination, take your clothes to the laundromat and give them a good wash. I always showered right after work and sometimes the water turned brown after me! – she told.

A final important warning from the flight attendant was never to take off your shoes on the plane: “Sometimes people take off their shoes to walk around, walk straight into the toilet in socks and even go barefoot! But due to the high probability of imbalance and the absence of a toilet, there may be urine on the floor. Imagine if you transferred it from a sock to a shoe and then into your house – it’s incredibly unsanitary!”
