The Wall Street Journal writes that the US authorities are putting pressure on Turkey to ban Russian airlines from using American-made aircraft for flights.
“Thus, Washington is trying to convince countries to enforce the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation last year,” the publication reports.
Otherwise, the US is ready to take action against Turkey itself. For example, Turkish officials could face “jail time, fines, loss of export preferences, and other penalties if they refuel and replace parts for American-made aircraft flying to Russia and Belarus.”
Since October 1, Russian and Belarusian airlines, including Aeroflot, have operated more than 2,100 flights to Turkey on American-made aircraft, including Boeing 777, 757 and 737, according to aviation analytical company Cirium.
