Italy’s health ministry has announced the highest weather-related “red” alert level in 12 cities across the country, including Rome.
The reason for this decision was the abnormal heat caused by the African anticyclone “Nero”, which led to a sharp increase in air temperature in the Apennine Peninsula.
Cities under red alert include Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Verona, Latina, Palermo, Perugia, Rieti, Turin, Florence, and Frosinone.
Meteorologists warn that in Rome and Florence, the air temperature can rise to +38 °C. These values may set new records for August.
Due to this extreme heat wave, authorities are advising residents and tourists to take precautions including staying at home, increasing water consumption, and limiting physical activity.
