Skyscrapers banned in Paris – new landmark is to blame

The Paris authorities have adopted a new urban development plan, which provides for a ban on the construction of buildings over 12 floors. The adoption of a new ban provoked the construction of a scandalous landmark – the 180-meter Triangle Tower.

Parisians don’t seem to like the more businesslike look of their favorite city like New York or London. Yes, there is a 330-meter Eiffel Tower in Paris, but it was built back in 1889, and over time, residents came to terms with the skyscraper, which became the main symbol of the city. From 1977 to 2010, the French capital had a ban on high-rise buildings caused by the construction of the 209-meter Montparnasse Tower. The skyscraper looks somewhat awkward against the backdrop of churches and residential buildings, and regularly falls into the ratings of the most ridiculous buildings.

The ban was lifted by the former mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, by setting the upper limit of 180 meters for office towers and 50 meters for residential buildings. However, in 2021, the construction of the Triangle glass pyramid began, which in 2026 will become the third tallest building in the city. The building has a trapezoidal shape, that is, from the center of Paris it will resemble a thin tower, but from the east and west of the city, its entire width will be visible.

A 42-story building, according to experts, will violate the integrity of the city’s panorama, and environmentalists fear that the operation of such a massive object will lead to a “catastrophic carbon footprint”. The total area of the building will be 91,000 m², two-thirds of which will be used for offices, and the rest will be occupied by a hotel with 130 rooms, a kindergarten and shops.

It was the controversy caused by the construction of the “Triangle” that influenced the new ban, writes The Mayor. Now, within the boundaries of Paris, it will be impossible to build a building higher than 37 m, and office skyscrapers, as before, no one will forbid building in the business district of La Defense outside the city.
