Strong winds in the Aegean Sea and other parts of Greece delayed and canceled ferry services at Athens ports on Tuesday, leaving many Greek islands cut off from the mainland, Athens newspaper Kathimerini reported.
In the country’s largest port, Piraeus, the ban prevented ferries from leaving for the islands in the early hours of the day. The storm did not affect only the islands in the Saronic Gulf.
Ferries in the small ports of Rafina and Lavrion also did not operate, which led to the complete cessation of transport links with the Cyclades.
Meanwhile, two cruise ships were forced to dock in Souda Bay on the island of Crete after strong winds made further sailing risky. A total of four thousand passengers are on two ships.
The meteorological service of the National Observatory in Athens reported that on Tuesday the wind force at sea reached 8 points on the Beaufort scale, which means a speed of 75 km/h and high waves with eddies. These winds are expected to persist throughout the day.
