A flight attendant is suing her employer, Irish airline Aer Lingus, for “inappropriate and derogatory” sexualization of female flight attendants. It is reported by The Sun, which reports DIP.
Elizabeth Barry has worked for Aer Lingus for over 30 years. However, after introducing the new uniform in 2020, the woman filed a complaint with the labor relations commission, saying that some of the details reinforced “sexist stereotypes” and “demean her dignity.”
Particularly disliked by the woman were the three petal-shaped openings on the blouse that “expose the skin just above the left breast” and the high-heeled shoes that are “too strongly associated with female sexuality.”
Elizabeth also stated that the uniforms for male flight attendants are much more comfortable and practical. Thus, the woman expressed the opinion that the airline discriminated against employees based on gender.
Representatives of Aer Lingus, in turn, replied that there was no reason to believe that the flight attendant was discriminated against.
The judge found that the carrier’s personnel were involved in the development of the uniform before it was put into service. In this regard, the complaint of the stewardess was recognized as unfounded.
