Crazy idea? Tourists go to Death Valley specifically to feel the heat at +56

The heat continues to rage in the US. On Sunday, the air temperature in Death Valley (California) reached 54 degrees, but the record of 1913 (+56.7 °C) was still not broken.

Hundreds of tourists came to Death Valley National Park last weekend. But not at all in order to admire the local natural beauties.

“We thought it was a great opportunity to witness a historic moment. If history is within reach, then it is not to be missed,” said one visitor to the Death Valley Visitor Center. He, like hundreds of other people, came to the national park specifically to experience the unprecedented heat and, perhaps, to witness the moment when the 1913 temperature record is broken.

There was even a queue of people who wanted to take pictures near the temperature board.

The US National Weather Service predicted that on Sunday, July 16, the temperature record recorded in 1913, when the air temperature was 134 degrees Fahrenheit, or 56.6 Celsius, could be broken in Death Valley. However, their predictions did not come true – the temperature did not rise above 54 degrees.

Death Valley isn’t the only place in the US that’s getting hot right now. For example, with Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon, a record of 116 degrees Fahrenheit (46.6 Celsius) was set. Temperatures are expected to drop slightly this week to 42-45 °C.
