Spain’s medical service said 510 people have died as a result of a tropical heat wave that lasted more than a week in Spain. According to estimates from the National Institute of Health, Charles III in Madrid shows that over 270 people died due to high air temperatures over the weekend alone.
The daily newspaper El Mundo notes that among the dead from the abnormal heat there are, in particular, young people who lost consciousness while working.
The newspaper cites the UGT trade union as having uncovered, among other things, the death of a mechanic from a car repair shop near Madrid, where the temperature reached over 45 degrees Celsius.
Spanish meteorologists predict that after more than a week of 40-degree heat on Tuesday, the air will cool in most Spanish regions.
Hot in Europe
The heat wave also affected Portugal, Italy, France, and England. The services there raised the highest level of alarm for the first time in history. They warn of danger to life and health. A red alert is in effect across most of England, including London. In the capital at 13:00 local time, 35 degrees Celsius was recorded.
