Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has commented that Russia is hiring “assassins” from Syria to fight in Ukraine after Moscow said militants from the war-torn country would be allowed to join its forces.
“This is a war against a very stubborn enemy who decided to use mercenaries against our citizens. Killers from Syria, a country where everything is destroyed… as they do here, with us,” he said in a video message.
In his speech, Zelenskiy said the European Union must do more for his troubled country, a day after EU leaders dashed his hopes of quickly joining the bloc.
“The European Union must do more. It must do more for us, for Ukraine. The decisions of politicians must coincide with the mood of their peoples,” he said.
“Yesterday there was a very important meeting of EU leaders, long and meaningful. We know what all the leaders said at this meeting, who spoke specifically, who supported us, who was silent and who tried to convince that the wording is still relevant. It is still not enough for Ukraine , for Europe and for our common freedom. How do we evaluate the decision made? It should be more categorical. This is not what we are waiting for,” Zelensky was quoted as saying by BGNES.
According to him, the vast majority of EU citizens are of the opinion that Ukraine should become part of the European Union.
“The Europeans know about this. The decision of yesterday’s meeting of EU leaders will now be considered by the European Commission. For implementation, for specific procedures, the EU must do more for us, for Ukraine and for itself. We expect this,” he said.
