The Russian military removed radioactive materials from the Chernobyl laboratories, Radio Liberty reports, citing the Ukrainian civil service that manages the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The whereabouts of the stolen materials are unknown. It is possible that they could have been thrown out in the exclusion zone or taken out by the Russians “as a keepsake”. The agency considers the second scenario “more likely”.
– If you carry such a souvenir with you for two weeks, the appearance of radiation burns and the onset of radiation sickness, as well as irreversible processes in the body, are guaranteed, – he emphasized.
According to this state agency, the impact of stolen and damaged materials is comparable to 700 kg of radioactive waste.
Also stolen include computers and laboratory equipment.
