US President Joe Biden said the United States is counting on European stability. Biden stated this during his visit to Poland.
The US President said during a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda that the US views Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which provides for the principle of collective defense, as a “sacred obligation.” Under this clause, an attack on any NATO member country is considered an attack on the entire pact.
“We accept Article 5 of the NATO Treaty as a sacred obligation. You can count on it,” Biden said to Dude.
“Your freedom belongs to us too,” Biden said to Dude, referring to one of Poland’s unofficial mottos. He assured the Polish president that the US and other NATO allies would come to their aid if Russia attacked them.
The US President also stated that “Stability in Europe is extremely important to the US.”
“I am convinced that Vladimir Putin was betting on the division of NATO, the separation of the eastern flank from the western, the division of countries because of their past differences. But he failed, we stayed together.”
Joe Biden noted that Poland assumed a “significant responsibility” during the Ukraine crisis by taking in “so many Ukrainians seeking asylum” and said the US should do the same and open its border to “100,000 more refugees” . However, he said other NATO allies need to do more.
For his part, Andrzej Duda said that relations between the two countries are flourishing despite the difficult times.
Earlier in the day, Biden also met with Ukraine’s foreign and defense ministers in Warsaw, promising them additional support in the war against Russia.
