WHO warns of “extremely high” risk of Omicron

The health organization has warned that the risk of global spread of the new version of COVID-19 – Omicron, is “extremely high”, reports Focus.

The WHO notes that this strain of coronavirus could lead to an increase in the incidence with serious consequences.

The UN agency, with a technical council from 194 member states, urged them to accelerate vaccination of high priority groups and prepare plans to maintain essential health services.

“Omicron has an unprecedented number of peak mutations, some of which are worrisome given their potential impact on the pandemic,” WHO said. “The overall global risk associated with the new option is worrying, with Omicron rated extremely high.”

WHO stresses that further research is needed to better understand Omicron’s potential to bypass vaccine protection, and more data is expected in the coming weeks.

“Cases of COVID-19 are expected in vaccinated people, albeit in small and predictable numbers,” the WHO added.
