The first case of monkeypox virus reported in Sweden

The disease occurred in a person living in the Stockholm area. Earlier infections were detected in Spain, Portugal, and the UK.

As Clara Sonden of the Public Health Administration noted, “The infected person is not seriously ill, but is under medical supervision.” It is not known where the virus was transmitted and an investigation is underway.

Monkeypox – what is it?

The office announced that it would submit a request to the government to classify monkeypox as a disease “dangerous to society”. This should allow for an obligation to report sickness and isolation.

Monkeypox is a very rare infectious zoonotic disease endemic to the African continent, where some rodents transmit it to monkeys and those humans. The virus does not spread easily between people, infection most often occurs through close contact with a sick person, and his body fluids, including saliva.

Cases in other countries

A health alert was issued Thursday in Madrid after seven cases of monkeypox were confirmed in young homosexuals. Similar infections have been reported this spring in the UK and Portugal, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
