Meta’s Supervisory Board has allowed women to display their nipples on Instagram and Facebook, as the ban on showing bare breasts “violates human rights.”
According to the media, a new dispute over the right to publish nude images on social networks flared up after Facebook’s algorithms blocked the posts of a transgender couple from the United States, considering their pictures to be a violation of the rules on sexualized content.
After complaints, the moderators of the social network manually restored the publications, but the situation came to the attention of the company’s supervisory board.
“Restrictions and exceptions to the rules regarding female nipples are extensive and confusing, especially as they apply to transgender and non-binary people,” the council said in a statement.
As such, the council decided to reverse the decision to take down nude nipple photos and recommended a review of the rules regarding the moderation of such pictures.
The innovation comes sometime after feminists came up with the hashtag slogan “free the nipple” and called for equal standards regarding the exposure of male and female breasts.
Later, celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and Lena Dunham supported the slogan, they were forced to remove topless photos from Instagram due to social network politics.
