Since January 1, the authorities of Riga have introduced a tourist tax deferred due to the pandemic, which will be paid by the accommodation facility (hotels, hostels, etc.). This is reported by the portal Delfi.lv.
“From January 1, 2023, in Riga, as in many other cities in Europe and the world, tourists began to collect the so-called tourist tax,” the message says.
The tax, according to the portal, is €1 for each night of one guest’s stay, but no more than €10. However, minors do not have to pay a fee. The funds received will have to be directed to the “implementation of projects that support tourism or the development of tourism infrastructure and contribute to the international recognition” of Riga.
It is noted that a similar fee exists in other popular tourist cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Brussels, and Lisbon. The authorities of Riga planned to introduce the tax in 2021, but due to the fall in the flow of tourists amid the pandemic, they postponed this decision.
