Global hotel occupancy surpasses pre-pandemic levels for the first time

Compared to 2019, the daily hotel booking index worldwide increased by 11 percent. At the same time, not only demand is growing, but also prices. This is reported by business intelligence data Amadeus Demand360.

The hotel occupancy index in March 2022 has already reached the level of 2019. In April, the figures began to rise, and in May they already exceeded the pre-pandemic level by 3 percent. This pattern is seen all over the world. For example, in the US, the occupancy index increased by 7 percent, and in Canada – it by 8.

Not only are demand and occupancy rising, but so are the prices of accommodations. So, according to Amadeus forecasts, for June, July, and August 2022, the global average is $200, which is 11 percent higher than in the same period in 2019, when the average price was $180. In some countries, an increase in room prices is predicted. For example, in France in July 2022, the price tag will rise to $428, which is 29 percent more than in 2019.

Importantly, over half of the trips (54 percent) are now booked a week in advance. This means that hotel occupancy currently recorded for the summer months will increase significantly.

“We are happy to see tourism resurging. We plan to continue our collaboration with hotel partners. For our part, we guarantee the technology and ideas needed to serve guests in the face of ongoing workforce shortages and last-minute bookings. This is where technology plays a critical role, helping hoteliers manage day-to-day operations as efficiently as possible,” said Francisco Pérez-Lozao Rueter, president of Amadeus Hospitality Business.

As for booking flights for June 4, 2022, among all countries in terms of the number of inbound flights in the coming summer months, the United States became the leader. Next come the UK, France, Germany, and Canada.

Car rental demand is also growing, with 33 percent more bookings in June, July, and August compared to the same period in 2021, according to Amadeus. The duration of the lease has also increased – from six days (in 2021 – five days), and the average daily rate – is $102 (in 2021 – $92).
