Two athletes from Georgia were suspended from the Tokyo Olympics for violating COVID restrictions. This was reported by the authoritative Japanese newspaper Nikkan Sports.
According to media reports, the silver medalists of the Olympic Games – judoists Vazha Margvelashvili and Lasha Shavdatashushvili – were deprived of their accreditation. They are alleged to have been spotted on the Tokyo TV Tower, in violation of the requirements for athletes to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the regulations, the participants of the Olympiad can be moved only between the place of residence, the place of training and the place of performances. Going out of town is strictly prohibited.
The speaker of the organizing committee of the Olympics, Masanori Taka, acknowledged the fact that the athletes violated the existing rules, but did not name or represent the countries they represent.
“We know this information. I will not disclose specific examples, but it goes without saying that in cases where there is a suspicion of a violation, we investigate and take appropriate action. Namely, harsh warnings were issued, explanations were given, and passes were temporarily suspended, ”Taka told a news conference on July 31.
The Georgian Olympic Committee has not yet commented on the information.
The Georgian national team has won four medals at the Olympics so far – one gold, three silver and one bronze. Now in Igor’s medal standings the team takes the 22nd place.
The Olympics in Tokyo are held almost without fans. The Japanese authorities have also decided to abandon fan zones, screenings on big screens and other events.
