Charles Michel tweeted after talking with Prime Minister Li Keqiang during an EU-China video summit that he expects China to use its influence in Moscow to end Russian aggression in Ukraine.
“The international community, in particular the European Union and China, have an obligation to use their influence and diplomacy to end the Russian war in Ukraine and the associated humanitarian crisis,” wrote the head of the European Council.
Warning for China
Opinions appeared in Brussels that a Russian attack on Ukraine could bring Beijing and Moscow closer. Therefore, ahead of the video summit, EU officials responsible for preparing it said that today European leaders would warn China against Russian military support and help it circumvent sanctions imposed by the West.
EU representatives stressed that such support would have a negative impact on economic relations, and the Celestial Empire is Europe’s largest trading partner.
At 2:00 pm, Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are to join Chinese President Xi Jinping.
